The government has launched a nationwide initiative urging the public to hand over zombie-style knives and machetes before they are officially banned from circulation.
Beginning 24 September, these weapons will be classified as prohibited items under the law, joining the ranks of previously banned dangerous items such as zombie knives, butterfly knives, Samurai swords, and push daggers. In anticipation of the ban, the public is encouraged to surrender these weapons safely and legally.
For a four-week period from 26 August to 23 September, police stations across England and Wales will facilitate the handover of these potentially lethal knives without legal consequences. Safe surrender bins will also be available, and individuals can contact their local police, council, or anti-knife crime charities to explore alternative disposal options.
After 24 September, possession of a zombie-style knife or machete could result in imprisonment.
Policing Minister Diana Johnson emphasised the importance of this initiative, stating, "Too many people have access to weapons that can cause devastating, life-altering harm. There is no legitimate reason for these types of weapons to be in our homes or on our streets."
She added, "This ban on zombie-style knives is the first step in our comprehensive plan to halve knife crime within a decade. It will soon be followed by the prohibition of ninja swords. We urge the public to act responsibly and hand in these weapons to help make our streets safer and protect lives."
The minister also called for collaboration between political, policing, and community leaders to combat the knife crime epidemic and secure a safer future for young people.
Individuals who possess these weapons are advised to consult government guidelines to locate their nearest designated police station and receive instructions on how to safely surrender them. This initiative is part of the government's broader commitment to reduce knife crime, which includes future bans, stricter regulations on online sales, and robust measures to prevent youth involvement in crime.
