Man Accused of Attempted Murder of Soldier to Stand Trial in January

Reducing Knife Crime

A man accused of attempting to fatally stab a uniformed soldier in a public street is scheduled to stand trial in January.

Anthony Esan, 24, from Mooring Road in Rochester, is charged with attempted murder and possession of a bladed article. The charges stem from an incident on July 23, when Esan allegedly attacked Lt Col Mark Teeton near Brompton Barracks in Gillingham. Police apprehended Esan approximately 30 minutes after the alleged stabbing.

During a hearing at Maidstone Crown Court on August 22, Judge Philip St. John-Stevens adjourned the arraignment proceedings until September 23. The hearing, which involved prosecutor Alison Morgan KC and defence counsel Tom Stern, has set the stage for the trial to begin on January 20.

The trial is expected to span three weeks and will be presided over by a High Court judge.
