Coventry Man Arrested After Knife Fight in Southend City Centre

Reducing Knife Crime

A man from Coventry is in police custody following a violent altercation involving machetes in Southend city centre during the early hours of this morning.

The fight broke out on Southchurch Road near Warrior Square shortly after 12:15 a.m., with witnesses reporting a group of individuals wielding various weapons, including a machete and a knife. Essex Police responded swiftly, arriving on the scene within ten minutes.

One man, aged 32, was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. After receiving treatment, he was arrested on suspicion of affray—a public offense involving fighting or the display of weapons—and remains in custody for questioning.

Essex Police are actively investigating the incident, with specialist officers from the Serious Crime Directorate leading the inquiry. Patrols in the Southend area will be increased over the coming days as officers work to reassure the community and prevent further violence.

Chief Inspector Paul Hogben urged the public to come forward with any information:

“We take incidents like this very seriously, and the Southend community can expect a robust response. Our dedicated team is thoroughly investigating this case, and we will provide updates as new information emerges. If you have any concerns or information, please contact us immediately.”

Anyone with information about the incident can reach Essex Police via their website at www.essex.police.uk or by calling 101, quoting incident number 15 of September 15th.

From September 24th, new laws will come into effect, making it illegal to own machetes and "zombie knives," adding these weapons to the list of prohibited bladed articles in the UK.
